The problem

Nearly 40% fail the CDL permit test the first time. The handbook is the reason.

It's 150+ pages of fine print, half of it doesn't show up on the test, and the stuff that does is buried. Most people walk in hoping for the best. A fail costs more than a retake fee.

$35+
Retake fee

Every failed section costs you another trip and another fee — before you ever get behind the wheel.

2–4 wk
Wait to retest

Most UT DMV offices book out weeks in advance. One fail can push your start date into next month.

$1,200+
Lost weekly pay

The average OTR driver loses over a grand a week waiting to retest. That's real money out of your pocket.

Three sample questions pulled straight from the guide — and one page of the Air Brakes cheat sheet.

Q 01 / Air BrakesTopic: Slack Adjusters

How much brake pedal pressure should you apply when checking the slack adjusters on manual adjustment brakes?

  • AApply and hold the service brake hard.
  • BNo pressure — the brakes must be fully released.
  • Pull hard on each slack adjuster by hand with brakes released.
  • DApply parking brake, then pull slack adjusters.
Why: Slack adjusters must be checked with the brakes released, so the pushrod can move freely. If you can pull it out more than about 1 inch where the rod comes out of the brake chamber, the slack adjuster needs adjustment.
Q 02 / General KnowledgeTopic: Stopping Distance

At 55 mph on dry pavement, roughly how far does a loaded tractor-trailer travel before coming to a complete stop?

  • AAbout 100 feet — the length of a bus.
  • BAbout 200 feet — half a football field.
  • About 300 feet — the length of a football field.
  • DAbout 500 feet.
Why: Total stopping distance ≈ perception (60 ft) + reaction (60 ft) + braking (170 ft) ≈ 290–300 ft at 55 mph. One of the most-tested numbers on the General Knowledge exam — memorize the football-field rule.
Q 03 / HazMatTopic: Placards

How many placards are required on a vehicle hauling a placarded load of hazardous materials?

  • ATwo — one on each side.
  • BThree — front, back, and driver's side.
  • Four — one on each side, one on the front, one on the rear.
  • DOnly one — on the driver's side.
Why: A placarded HazMat load requires four identical placards — front, rear, and both sides. This is a near-guaranteed question on the HazMat endorsement exam.

Studied for three nights. The cheat sheets for air brakes were a lifesaver — I walked in knowing the 60/85/135 psi numbers cold. Passed GK, Air Brakes, and Combination on the first try.

I failed Air Brakes twice before I found this. The way they break down slack adjusters and the leak test finally made sense. Don't sleep on the practice questions — they're almost identical to the real exam.

The HazMat endorsement section alone was worth it. 30 questions on placards, loading rules, and tunnel restrictions — all answered. Paid the $39, passed the test, got the endorsement. Easy money back into my paycheck.

I'm 52 and I haven't studied for a test since high school. The guide is written like a person is talking to you, not a government handbook. Took me a week, passed first try.

My CDL school gave me a handbook and said 'good luck.' This guide told me what was actually on the test. Finished all three sections in one morning.

Common questions

Everything else you're wondering.

What exactly am I buying?+
A 184-page PDF study guide plus a 12-page printable cheat-sheet pack. That's it. No subscription, no login, no app to install. You download the files the second you pay and they're yours forever — including free updates when the handbook changes.
How is this different from the free handbook?+
The official handbook is 150+ pages written by a state agency. It covers everything, including a lot of material that isn't on the test. Our guide is written like a tutor — we tell you exactly what shows up on the exam, explain it in plain English, and back it up with practice questions that mirror the real test.
Is this specific to Utah?+
Yes. The guide covers the federal CDL material everyone has to know, plus Utah-specific rules, weight limits, and DMV procedures. If you're testing in UT, this is the one.
How does the pass guarantee actually work?+
Simple: study the guide, take the CDL permit test at your DMV, and if you don't pass, email your fail notice (a photo of the slip is fine) to us within 30 days. We refund the full amount within 48 hours. No forms, no support tickets. We refunded 14 drivers last month.
How long does it take to study?+
Most drivers pass after 2–5 evenings with the guide. If you're cramming, plan on a full weekend. The practice questions at the end of each section tell you whether you're ready before you walk in.
Does it cover endorsements too?+
Yes — HazMat (H), Tank (N), Doubles/Triples (T), Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) all have their own sections and practice question sets. If you're adding an endorsement later, the same guide covers you.
Can I read it on my phone?+
Yes. It's a standard PDF — it opens in every phone's built-in reader. Drivers study on breaks, at the terminal, in the cab. Print the cheat sheets if you want something on paper the night before.
Last thing

You can keep guessing what's on the test. Or you can know.

Buy the guide. Study a few nights. Pass your permit test. If you don't, we refund you. That's the whole pitch.
